PORTLAND Portland Public School teachers tallied votes Thursday on whether or not to accept a new contract deal with Portland Public Schools.

Teachers have been casting ballots over the last several days. All must be in by 5 p.m. Thursday.

The contract deal arrived at the eleventh hour on Feb. 18 after 10 months of negotiations and just two days before a historic teacher strike was set to begin.

Under the brokered terms, PPS has agreed to hire 150 more teachers, add two more days to the school year and give teachers a 2.3 percent annual raise for the next three years, among other changes.
