PORTLAND -- A little bit of luck helped reunite a cat with its owners in Washington County this past weekend.

Patrick Gillett and Lisa Kinsley s cat, Nico, went missing more than six months ago. They finally gave up their search and went to the Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter to look for a new cat to adopt.

I thought it was unlikely she was still alive, said Gillett.

While at the shelter on Saturday, another couple arrived with a cat they had found a week earlier. That cat turned out to be Nico!

My mind has been blown, said Gillett.

Ithink we need to buy a lottery ticket, added Kinsley.

If you saw this happen in a movie, you wouldn t believe it. This was serendipity, or fate, or maybe just plain magic, said animal services manager Deborah Wood. We reunite about 1200 animals a year with their owners but not like this. What are the odds of this happening?

Nico was doing well. She was scheduled for a quick surgery to fix a bladder issue.
