VANCOUVER -- Family members and bystanders pulled a man from the water after he nearly drowned in Vancouver Lake Sunday, fire officials said.

Vancouver Fire Department crews received a call just before 5 p.m. about a potential drowning, according to Capt. Kevin Stromberg.

A 20-year-old man had been swimming in the extremely cold water when he cramped up, Stromberg said.

Family members and bystanders were able to pull the man to shore. Paramedics took him to a local hospital for observation.
