PORTLAND – South by Southwest has some competition in Portland.

SXSW, the music, film and tech festival in Austin, Texas, has become a hub for innovators in technology, music lovers and film buffs.

But now, Portland has a joint tech and music fest that's starting to rival the Austin event.

TechfestNW, which takes place this year on August 15 and 16, gathers tech leaders at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry for two days of speakers, panels, and parties, all centered around what's next in the world of tech.

The event is a sibling of MusicfestNW, both hosted by the Willamette Week. This year, MusicfestNW is also changing things up, altering its schedule from a month-long series of shows in various venues around Portland to a more traditional festival that takes over Tom McCall Waterfront Park this Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17.

This year, TechfestNW speakers include Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) on digital privacy, anthropologist Genevieve Bell on the prehistory of robots, and aeronautical engineer Tag McGeer on drones, among many others.

The fest also includes a job fair, featuring a long list of tech companies looking to hire new talent.

On Saturday, as TechFestNW wraps up, MusicfestNW kicks off at waterfront park with a lineup of headliners and up-and-coming acts including Spoon, Haim, the Tune-Yards and Girl Talk.
