The Portland Winterhawks (28-5-1-0) won their fifth straight game with a 3-1 victory in Everett Sunday over the Silvertips (13-22-0-2).
The Hawks got on the board quickly when defenseman Troy Rutkowski beat Silvertips netminder Austin Lotz at the 4:29 mark to make it 1-0, which would be the lone goal of the period.
Portland went ahead 2-0 at the 7:34 mark of the second when Nic Petan scored his 22nd goal of the season. The Silvertips got on the board just under two minutes later when Ryan Harrison scored to cut the Hawks’ lead to 2-1, which remained the score through the end of the frame.
The Winterhawks regained their two-goal lead 12:55 into the third when Keegan Iverson scored to make it 3-1. The Silvertips cut it to one when Josh Winquist scored at the 15:01 mark to make it 3-2, but that was as close as they’d get as the Winterhawks closed the door from there.
Mac Carruth picked up the win net with 30 saves on 32 shots. Lotz made 28 saves on 31 Portland shots.
The Hawks play their final game before the holiday break Tuesday in Spokane at 7 p.m.
