The Everett Silvertips have won just once against the Portland Winterhawks all season. They’ll have to win Thursday night in order to keep their season alive. Portland topped Everett 5-4 Wednesday night to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series of the WHL. The puck will drop at 7pm for game 4.
The second period featured two goals in just 13 seconds from Portland’s Nino Niederreiter and Ty Rattie. The flurry was enough to give the Winterhawks the lead for good. Sven Bartschi was the first to score for the Winterhawks at 4:21 into the first period.
Everett was able to tie the game up with a power play goal from Tyler Maxwell with 42 seconds remaining in the first period. Rasmus Rissanen gave the Silvertips a 3-2 lead at 9:40 in the second period. That was answered by the quick goals from Niederreiter and Rattie.
Ryan Johansen made it a 5-3 game in the third period with a backhand shot through a sliver of daylight just under the crossbar. Rissanen scored again for Everett with just 1:31 remaining in the game, but Portland was able to hold on for the win.
Mac Carruth got the win for Portland, stopping 34 of 38 shots.
