After posting the best record in the regular season, the Portland Winterhawks beat the Everett Silvertips 6-2 Thursday night in Everett to complete a four-game sweep in their opening round playoff series. It’s the first playoff sweep for the Winterhawks since 1998, when Portland swept the Brandon Wheat Kings to advance to the Memorial Cup.
Everett opened the scoring with a goal by Jari Erricson 5:22 into the game. The Winterhawks answered with five straight goals. All six Portland goals came from different players. Mac Carruth picked up the victory with 31 saves on 33 shots.
In round two of the WHL playoffs, the Winterhawks opponent depends on the outcome of the series between the Spokane Chiefs and Chilliwack Bruins. Spokane leads the series 3-1. If Spokane wins the series, the Winterhawks will take on the Kelowna Rockets. If Chilliwack wins, the Winterhawks will play the Bruins.
