PORTLAND -- Mac Carruth’s shutout led the Portland Winterhawks to a 4-0 win Saturday night against the Everett Silvertips. The victory gives Portland a 1-0 lead in the opening round of the WHL playoffs.
The shutout is a playoff first for Carruth, who had 32 saves on 32 shots. The last playoff shutout for the Winterhawks came in 2006 in a second round game against Vancouver.
Most of the Winterhawks’ scoring came in the first period. Riley Boychuk put home a rebound on a two-man power play at the 4:46 mark. Brendan Leipsic scored on a backhand shot from the high slot at the 7:26 mark. Ryan Johansen stole the puck 41 seconds later at his own blueline and went down the ice on a breakaway. His shorthanded goal gave the Winterhawks a 3-0 lead.
Brad Ross added the Winterhawks’ fourth goal at the 12:28 mark of the third period.
Johansen finished with three points with a goal and two assists, with two points apiece from Boychuk (one goal, one assist) and Nino Niederreiter (two assists).
The Winterhawks fired 45 shots at the Silvertips, including a 19-3 advantage in the first period, with Siemens making 41 saves. The Hawks were 1-5 on the power play and a perfect 4-4 on the penalty kill.
The two teams hit the ice Sunday night at 5 p.m. at the Rose Garden for Game 2 of the series.
