PORTLAND – The Portland Winterhawks lost Game 5 of the Western Hockey League Finals Friday night, 4-1, to the Kootenay Ice.
It was a must-win situation at the Rose Garden, with nearly 11,000 fans on hand.
Forward Brad Ross was back in the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for a hit last weekend.
The Hawks came out roaring, as it took them less than three minutes to get on the board with a goal from Tyler Wotherspoon.
But the Kootenay Ice kept their composure and tied the game before the end of the period. Then they grabbed the lead with less than a minute to go in the second period.
With two more goals, including an empty netter in the final minute, the Ice won it 4-1. They took the series, four games to one.
