PORTLAND – The Portland Winterhawks lost 2-1 Friday in Game 5 of their playoff series against the Kelowna Rockets.
The Winterhawks lead the series 3-2, and Game 6 was set for Sunday at 5 p.m. in Kelowna.
The Hawks took 55 shots at the Rockets, but Kelowna goalie Adam Brown stopped 54 of them. Portland goalie Mac Carruth made 36 saves on 38 Kelowna shots.
After a scoreless first period, the Rockets struck first at 4:38 in the second period when Mitchell Callahan scored off a rebound on a power play.
The Winterhawks tied the game later that period when Nino Niederreiter scored.
The goal extended Niederreiter’s scoring streak to nine games.
From there both teams fought for a go-ahead goal, but stayed at 1-1, forcing overtime.
In the extra frame, Kelowna’s Jessey Astles scored a breakaway goal to give Kelowna the win.
