PORTLAND – The Portland Winterhawks lost 2-1 Friday in Game 5 of their playoff series against the Kelowna Rockets.

The Winterhawks lead the series 3-2, and Game 6 was set for Sunday at 5 p.m. in Kelowna.

The Hawks took 55 shots at the Rockets, but Kelowna goalie Adam Brown stopped 54 of them. Portland goalie Mac Carruth made 36 saves on 38 Kelowna shots.

After a scoreless first period, the Rockets struck first at 4:38 in the second period when Mitchell Callahan scored off a rebound on a power play.

The Winterhawks tied the game later that period when Nino Niederreiter scored.

The goal extended Niederreiter’s scoring streak to nine games.

From there both teams fought for a go-ahead goal, but stayed at 1-1, forcing overtime.

In the extra frame, Kelowna’s Jessey Astles scored a breakaway goal to give Kelowna the win.
