PORTLAND -- The Portland Winterhawks lost 2-1 to the Spokane Chiefs in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals Friday at the Rose Garden.
Spokane scored first, 2:11 into the game, in the first period’s only goal.
The Chiefs scored again 4:25 into the second period on a power play goal to give Spokane a 2-0 lead.
The Winterhawks finally got on the board with a Ryan Johansen goal, with 24 seconds left in the third.
Winterhawks goaltender Mac Carruth stopped 41 of the 43 shots he faced. Spokane’s James Reid stopped 27 of 28 Portland shots.
The two teams meet again Sunday for Game 2 at the Rose Garden. The game starts at 5 p.m.
