The Portland Winterhawks wrapped up their second round series in the WHL playoffs Sunday night with a 4-2 victory against the Kelowna Rockets. The Winterhawks won the series in six games, after sweeping the Everett Silvertips in the opening round.
Portland now advances to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in ten years. Portland will play the winner of the Spokane Chiefs - Tri City Americans series.
The Winterhawks got on the board in the first period with two goals scored in just 51 seconds by Ty Rattie and Sven Bartschi. Craig Cunningham added a goal in the second period to build a 3-0 lead.
Kelowna answered in the second period with a goal by Geordie Wudrick to make it a 3-1 game heading into the third period. Brett Bulmer scored a power play goal early in the third to narrow Portland’s lead to 3-2.
The Winterhawks shut the door on the Rockets late in the game with an empty net goal by Joe Morrow with just 3 seconds remaining. Winterhawks goaltender Mac Carruth made 45 saves on 47 shots.
Portland will host the first two games of the Western Conference Finals at the Rose Garden. Game 1 will be played Friday night at 7 p.m. Game 2 is set for 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are currently available online and will go on sale Monday morning at 10 a.m. at all Ticketmaster locations. Tickets will also be sold at the Rose Garden and Memorial Coliseum box offices.
