The Portland Winterhawks now lead the WHL’s Western Conference Finals 2-1 after an overtime victory in Game 3 against the Spokane Chiefs. Brendan Leipsic scored the deciding goal 7:44 into the overtime period to make it a 3-2 game.
After losing Game 1, the Winterhawks now hold an edge in the best-of-seven series. The Winterhawks have not lost on the road in the playoffs.
Spokane’s Jared Cowen scored 15:07 into the first period to give the Chiefs their first lead. Portland answered a minute later with a goal by Taylor Peters. The game remained tied at 1-1 through a scoreless second period.
Spokane retook the lead 8:40 into the third period with a goal by Levko Koper. It was his fifth goal of the playoffs. The Chiefs looked to be headed for a win, but Ryan Johansen scored with just 2:14 remaining in the third period to tie the game and send it to overtime. Johansen has scored 9 goals in the playoffs.
Mac Carruth, who was named CHL Goalie of the Week earlier in the day, stopped 41 of Spokane’s 43 shots. Portland had just 32 shots on goal.
Game 4 will be played Friday at 7:05 p.m. in Spokane. Game 5 will be played Saturday at the Rose Garden in Portland.
