The Portland Winterhawks evened their second round playoff series with the Kelowna Rockets with a 6-3 victory Sunday night at the Rose Garden. Center Ryan Johansen registered his first career hat trick with goals in the second and third periods. Riley Boychuk, Joe Morrow and Ty Rattie also scored goals for Portland.
The Winterhawks nearly doubled Kelowna’s shot total at 52-28. That includes a 19-5 shot advantage in the third period.
Kelowna opened the scoring in the first period with a Shane McColgan goal. But the Winterhawks exploded in the second period, where they put four shots into the net.
Mac Carruth stopped 25 Kelowna shots to pick up the win. It’s the first Portland win in the series, which is now tied 1-1. Portland swept its opening round series over the Everett Silvertips.
The series now shifts to Kelowna for games 3 and 4 Tuesday and Wednesday. Portland will host game 5 Friday night at the Rose Garden. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
