PORTLAND -- The Portland Thorns have their eye on first place and their 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC Wednesday was a big step toward that goal.
Both teams started the night tied for second place.
In the 18th minute, Sky Blue midfielder Katy Freels' free kick bounced off of Portland defender Nikki Marshall and into the goal to give Sky Blue FC the 1-0 lead on an own goal.
Portland’s Alex Morgan scored in the 37th minute to tie, leaving the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
Mana Shim scored for the Thorns in the 65th minute, giving her a goal in each of the last four games.
Allie Long in the 73rd minute curled the ball into the top right corner for the Thorns to take the 3-1 lead and seal the deal.
The win puts the Thorns all alone in second place, just one point behind first place Kansas City, whom Portland will host on Sunday. It’ll be the final home game of the regular season for the Thorns and they’ll take over first place if they win.
