PORTLAND, Ore. -- Women's professional soccer is coming to Portland in a big way.
On Friday, the Portland Thorns FC announced the first seven members of the new team's roster, and it includes Canada's greatest player, and the standout scorer for US Women's National Team.
The first seven players named to the Portland Thorns include Alex Morgan (US), Tobin Heath (US), Rachel Buehler (US), Christine Sinclair (CAN), Karina LeBlanc (CAN), Marlene Sandoval (MEX) and Rosario Saucedo (MEX).
Veteran Christine Sinclair is Canada's national team captain, and its most decorated player ever. Sinclair also starred at the University of Portland as a collegiate player. Sinclair memorably scored 3 goals for Canada in their 4-3 loss to Team USA in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The youthful Alex Morgan has quickly become the top scorer for the US Women's National Team. She scored the game-winning goal against Canada in the Olympics and was named the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. Morgan had a team-high 28 goals and 21 assists in 2012, joining Mia Hamm as the only U.S. Women's National Team players to notch both 20 goals and 20 assists in the same year.
