PORTLAND, Ore. -- The newest member of the Portland Timbers made his debut Sunday night at Jeld-Wen field in grand style.
Starting at forward in the Timbers' final preseason game, Kris Boyd headed in a cross from Jorge Perlazzo in the 7th minute to give Portland the win 1-0 over AIK of Sweden.
Boyd was a star in the Scottish premiere league, where he scored 164 goals in 296 matches. It was his first game action for the Timbers, who signed him to a seven-figure contract.
"Yeah it was a good start, but the most important thing was to get my fitness out of the game, and yeah, to top it off with a goal was good," said Boyd.
"People can see what he's capable of doing in and around the 6 (yard box)," said Timbers John Spencer.
More than 17,000 fans were on hand at Jeld-Wen field to watch the win. The Timbers completed the 3-game home preseason tournament undefeated, with a win and two draws.
The Timbers concluded their 2012 preseason unbeaten, with a record of 4-0-3.
The Timbers open their 2012 season at home on Monday March 12 against the Philadelphia Union.
