PORTLAND -- A little Portland Timbers fan got a big surprise when two of his favorite players stopped by his room at OHSU Hospital.

Midfielders Rodney Wallace and Mike Chabala stopped by to hang out with Jake Dering Thursday.

Jake is only 7 years old, but he's already been through a lot. He's had 18 different surgeries to treat a rare genetic disorder. His last operation was Monday.

His mom said the visit from the Timbers would definitely help his recovery.

"This is the first I've seen him be happy and smile, and be awake for more than a few minutes,” said Chellie Dering. “So it's fantastic. He's thrilled that they're here."

The players also brought him some gifts, including a signed game jersey and some hats.
