PORTLAND -- The Portland Timbers begin their new era in Major League Soccer with an announcement later this month about who gets signed from the current roster.

It begins a process that includes an expansion draft in November, and official unveiling of the team's new uniforms in December, said spokesman Chris Metz.

It's in the expansion draft that the Timbers find out who gets cast off other MLS teams and are made available to them and the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps.

In January, the MLS will hold a combine testing the talent and athletic ability of incoming players who will be picked that week in the Major League Soccer Superdraft.

Amuse yourself at this site of a mock draft that has Portland picking 6 foot 4 Omar Salgado of the US Under 20 Team.

PGE Park will still be under renovation when camp begins in late January, Metz said. A practice site has not yet been identified.

The first match will be in March. The league has not yet established a schedule.

Any date with the Sounders will be circled.
