PORTLAND – While the Portland Timbers were in Chicago snapping a long losing streak this weekend, their fans were working on a community project in Southeast Portland.

Operation Pitch Invasion held its first event at Ed Benedict Park Saturday.

The goal of the Timbers Army was to improve local fields so the public can better enjoy the game of soccer.

“Right now what we're doing is picking up rocks and trying to put in extra dirt so we can even out the playing field,” said volunteer Tammy Ortega.

"This is the beauty of Operation Pitch Invasion,” said volunteer Shawn Levy added, “We're not spending any money today; we're just putting in the back labor and helping the organization."

Portland Parks and Recreation provided the tools and materials for the project.
