PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jessica Tsao scored the go-ahead goal from the top of the box and Portland went on to defeat James Madison 3-2 Saturday night and advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA women's soccer tournament.
It was the 19th straight victory for the second-seeded Pilots (20-1-0), who will play top-seeded Stanford on Friday.
"I saw the far post was open, so I was just trying to get it there," Tsao, a defender, said afterward.
"Gooooaaaal!" forward Megan Rapinoe chimed in.
Danielle Foxhoven and Korie Nicholson also scored for Portland, which won NCAA titles in 2002 and 2005.
Teresa Rynier gave James Madison (14-7-2) the early lead when she beat Portland goalkeeper Kelsey Davis in the sixth minute.
The Pilots looked as if they would tie it with Charney Burk controlling the ball in front of James Madison goalkeeper Diane Wszalek, but her shot sailed over the net. Foxhoven got it done when she headed it in off a free kick in the 35th minute, putting the sold-out crowd at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex on its feet.
It was Foxhoven's team-leading 16th goal of the season. It was also the first goal Wszalek had allowed in the tournament.
Wszalek made six saves. Davis made one.
The Pilots went up 2-1 on Tsao's shot from 18 yards out in the 43rd minute, and Nicholson added her goal in the 55th minute as temperatures in Portland dipped into the 30s.
Corky Julien scored for James Madison in the 84th minute. It was her team-leading 16th goal of the season.
"It was a fun atmosphere to be in," James Madison coach David Lombardo said. "We just wanted to come out here and give it our best shot, and that's what we did."
The Cardinal (21-1-1) defeated Rutgers 1-0 earlier in the day and will host Friday's match against the Pilots.
Portland won opening round matches against Northern Arizona and Texas to advance to the third round. James Madison advanced with victories over Georgia and Wake Forest.
"At the end of the day it was the result that we wanted," Portland coach Garrett Smith said. "They came out and did what they were supposed to do -- make a game of it."
