Ore. BoSox rookie first Navajo to make it to Series

11:43 AM PDT on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

By KGW Staff

The first Navajo Major Leaguer is a former Oregon State Beaver now headed to the World Series with the Boston Red Sox.

Former Beaver Jacob Ellsbury was also just named American League Rookie of the Month.

One year ago, the Madras native was playing baseball in Arizona, trying to hone his game.

Ellsbury started the season in the minor leagues and worked his way onto the Red Sox playoff roster. He starts Wednesday night in centerfield when Boston takes on the Colorado Rockies.

He's also the first Native American from the Navajo nation to make it to the World Series.

It's Ellsbury's first trip to the fall classic, but it’s Boston's second trip to the Series in four years. It’s a first for the Rockies.
