Reinstated Heytvelt to miss first week of Gonzaga's practices

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Josh Heytvelt, reinstated yesterday to the Gonzaga basketball team after an eight-month suspension for drug possession, will likely miss the first week of practice with foot pain.
Gonzaga spokesman Oliver Purnell says a recent MRI exam showed Heytvelt, the team's leading scorer, has a "hot spot" of irritation on his right foot. Doctors believe Heytvelt should be able to return within a week.
The university announced yesterday it was reinstating Heytvelt and Theo Davis, a redshirt freshman who was also arrested with Heytvelt in Cheney in February. Police found hallucinogenic mushrooms in Heytvelt's car during a traffic stop.
Heytvelt has done about 300 hours of community service and passed weekly drug tests in compliance with a court-supervised diversion program.
The Bulldogs, who won their eighth West Coast Conference tournament title in nine years last season but then lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Indiana, began practice last night. Another returning starter, forward David Pendergraft, is recovering from surgery last month that removed scar tissue from his knee.
