EUGENE, Ore. -- Authorities are trying to crack down not only on drunk driving following college football games in Oregon, but drinking during the games as well.

During the Ducks game in Eugene, at least 57 people were ejected from Autzen Stadium for drinking violations.

“Eugene police officers, Lane County sherriff's deputies, and university DPS officers kept a watchful eye for those that had partied beyond their ability to behave appropriately, and for those attempting to drink in parts of the stadium where alcohol is not allowed,” Doug Mazon with the Eugene Police Deptartment said.

That included three people who were arrested inside the stadium.

And outside, Mazon said police arrested for people for driving under the influence just after they left the stadium, and another two people who were watching the game as they drank offsite.

Saturday was especially busy, due to a trio of events that typically involve drinking.

On Saturday, Ducks and Beaver fans headed to Eugene and Corvallis to watch college football.

Department of Transportation officials estimated upwards of 100,000 fans were on the road, doubling the normal amount of traffic on the freeway.

Near Salem, the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest also continued to draw visitors, also jamming the roads. The annual German festival features beer tents, polka bands, sauerkraut, and dancing.

Oregon State Police increased drunk driving patrols with the help of a new mobile breathalyzer tool.

ODOT said it’s in the best interests of the state to keep traffic moving, since a freeway shutdown in one direction for one hour means $375,000 in lost revenue.

The agency has suspended its extensive road work in the Eugene area for Saturday. And it will remove cones to return the freeway temporarily from two lanes to three on the northbound side.

Police were warning drivers to leave plenty of time for their trip, to be patient with traffic and not to rubberneck, if they can help it.
