Costa, a sophomore, injured the knee in a noncontact drill a week earlier, but it was thought then that he might be able to play for part of the season.
He missed last season with a similar injury to the knee.
Justin Roper, who had been competing with Costa for the job, will start Saturday night for Oregon in its opener against Washington at Autzen Stadium.
