12:37 PM PDT on Friday, July 11, 2008
BEND, Ore. -- A 29-year-old Australian bicycle racer is in critical condition at a Bend hospital after crashing on the open day of the six-stage Cascade Cycling Classic road race.
Team Type 1 member Ben Brooks had finished a climb south of Prineville and was descending at about 30 miles per hour when he crossed a cattle guard, lost control and fell of his bike.
Testing results have showed no major internal bleeding.
Brooks' injury left Team Type 1 with seven riders.
His teammate, Matt Wilson, won the second stage of the race Thursday.
