EUGENE, Ore. -- In the space of about an hour Friday night, Kara Goucher went from pure elation to total despair.

Nike

Adam and Kara Goucher are two of America's top distance runners.

Goucher, part of Nike's Oregon Project stable of runners, won the 5,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic trials, but then watched with sadness as her husband, Adam, lost his shot at joining the team for Beijing by finishing seventh in the 10,000 meters.

"Winning was a huge accomplishment for me and it was really awesome, but right now I'm really sad," she said, trying unsuccessfully to suppress her tears.

Jennifer Rhines finished second and Shalane Flanagan was third to also qualify for the U.S. Olympic.

Goucher, who finished second in the 10,000 earlier at Olympic trials, finished the 5,000 in 15 minutes, 1.02 seconds to earn the chance to go for the rare double.

"With about 200 (meters) to go, I was like, well, I'm still here. It was one of those moments where I knew I had to risk it," she said.

Goucher gritted her teeth as she pulled away from Rhines and Flanagan to the delight of the fans at Hayward Field.

"The crowd here is so amazing, and I had so much fun. I don't want to race anywhere but here from now on," she said. "This is my home track now."

Goucher, who moved to Oregon to train in the Oregon Project with coach Alberto Salazar, said she hopes to run both races in Beijing.

Flanagan, who owns the American record in the 5,000 and 10,000, finished third and also will have the chance to go for the double. She beat Goucher in the 10,000.

"If my coach and my country think I should do both, then I'll do both," she said about doubling up at the Olympics.

Rhines finished second and qualified three days after her 34th birthday.
