Former Portland star considering retirement

07:02 AM PDT on Tuesday, July 3, 2007

By JOSHUA GOODMAN, Associated Press Writer

BARINAS, Venezuela -- Goalkeeper Kasey Keller, a veteran of four World Cups for the United States, may retire if he find doesn't find a new club to his liking.

Keller, who made his 102nd international appearance in Monday night's 3-1 loss to Paraguay in the Copa America, said he had received seven or eight offers from clubs around the world but that he was still waiting for the right situation for himself and his family.

"If in four or six weeks I don't find the perfect opportunity that would allow me to play another year or two at the top level then, yes, retirement is a possibility," the former University of Portland star said.

Kasey played the last 2 1/2 seasons at Borussia Moenchengladbach and often was ranked among the Bundesliga's top goalkeepers. But he left the team at the end of the season, when Moenchengladbach was relegated to Germany's second division.

Keller also has played at Millwall, Leicester and Tottenham in the English Premier League and Rayo Vallecano in Spain. Before he signed with Moenchengladbach in 2005, Keller nearly agreed to a deal with Major League Soccer.

"At 37, and having played in three of the top leagues, I'm just kind of looking for that situation that's perfect for me and my family," he said. "My children are 9 years old and have been in three different countries and three different schools."

Keller was one of the few veterans who traveled to Venezuela to anchor a mostly youthful U.S. team, which has gone 0-2 and been outscored 7-2.

After starting for the United States at the 1998 and 2006 World Cups, Keller lost his spot as No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper to Tim Howard, who starts for England's Everton and was in the goal when the United States beat Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final on June 24. Keller started in the Americans' 2-1 semifinal victory over Canada.
