AST Dew Tour: Translating stunt lingo

01:15 PM PDT on Thursday, August 16, 2007

By TERESA BELL, kgw.com Staff

Huh -- What's that mean?

Just in case you’re not entirely in tune with all the funky action sports technical terms, here’s a primer to get you “amped” for the “mad” competitions:

Backside air: Gaining air (usually out of a half pipe) and traveling in the direction your toes are facing while turning backside.

Benihana: Essentially a tailgrab, with the back hand holding the tail while the back foot is taken off the skateboard and extended downwards below the board on the heelside.

Madonna: A frontside, one-footed lien to tail on vert, meaning you have to go frontside and have to smack your tail off the coping on the way down.

McTwist: A vert trick consisting of a 540-degree rotation with a backflip. Named after its inventor, Mike McGill.

Stalefish: A difficult grab trick requiring plenty of flexibility; the back hand grips the heelside of the skateboard, roughly in the middle, and both knees are bent and pionted toward the nose of hte skateboard.

Phillips 66: A reverse elguerial, meaning another fakie 360-degree invert.

Vert:  The half-pipe event. A half-pipe is like a big "U" with two transition areas at either end that extend to vertical stands, separated by the flat bottom in between.

Park:  A specially designed course with jumps, obstacles, ramps and rails.  The simulated street course is built to resemble a skatepark, rather than an urban street setting.

BMX dirt:  BMX stands for bicycle motocross.  Riders race through a course, earning extra points for stunts when their bike is airborne.

But visitors don’t just pour into the event for the daredevil stunts and flashy competitions, a village of exciting spectator activities also travels with the tour that features video gaming and live concerts, to name just a few of the top attractions.
