PORTLAND, Ore. -- A celebrated track and field coach from Wisconsin is joining the Nike Oregon Project.
Jerry Schumacher has been coaching the men's cross-country and track distance teams at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
He'll bring an elite group of post-collegiate runners with him to Oregon, including five-time NCAA champion Chris Solinsky.
Alberto Salazer, the famed coach of the Oregon Project, says he sees Schumacher as his eventual successor.
Salazar has been coping with health problems after having a heart attack a year ago.
At the Oregon Project, he coaches athletes including Galen Rupp and Kara and Adam Goucher.
Salazar tells The Oregonian that he is hoping to bring in two new athletes: Joaquin Chapa, who ran at Stanford and Oregon, and former Stanford runner Ari Lambie.
