North Medford, Crater and La Grande win baseball titles

KEIZER, Ore. -- Kody Stevens hit a run-scoring single in the third inning and North Medford held on to beat Westview 3-2 in the OSAA Class 6A state baseball title game Saturday evening.

Freshman Matt Maurer (8-2) allowed two runs and three hits over five innings for the Black Tornadoes (27-3), the Southwest Conference champion playing in their seventh title game.

North Medford beat Tualatin 8-5 to advance to the title game at Volcanoes Stadium.

Westview (21-10) was playing in the championship for the first time in the school's 13-year history. But two errors by shortstop Kyle Larson cost the Wildcats in a two-run second inning for the Black Tornadoes.

Senior Ben Pressler (8-4) allowed three runs on 10 hits over six innings for unranked Westview, which beat No. 4 West Linn 8-7 in 10 innings to advance to the finals. The Wildcats also beat sixth-ranked Sheldon in extra innings.

In the Class 5A championship, Jesse Warren's sacrifice to right in the seventh inning scored the winning run and Crater defeated Churchill 2-1.

Warren' pop-up scored Zach Boskovich, who singled to left for the Comets (24-5-1), the Southern Sky Conference Champion.

Chris Thomas threw seven innings, allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Crater was making its first trip to the finals since winning its only baseball title in 2000.

Darrell Hunter allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts through seven innings for Churchill (21-8), which advanced to the final for the first time.

The Crater girls also won the OSAA state softball title on Saturday.

In the Class 4A final, Jordan Lanman's singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and La Grande defeated Newport 6-5.

The sixth-ranked Tigers (25-5) tied it on Anthony Nice's two-run double in the same inning, and Nice scored on Lanman's single to right.

Zach Nice got the win in 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He gave up two hits and struck out six for the Greater Oregon League Champions.

Travis Iverson took the loss for top-ranked Newport (28-2). He allowed four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Designated hitter Chase Meister drove in two runs during a five-run third inning for the Val-Co League champions.

In Friday's small school championships, Portland Christian defeated Riddle 4-2 in the Class 2A-1A title game. Burns beat Regis 3-2 to claim the 3A championship.
