Girl banned from boys team gets national attention
11:33 AM PDT on Friday, May 30, 2008
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Jaime Nared just wants to play basketball.
The 12-year-old Beaverton area basketball player, who was banned from playing on a boys team last month, has become a reluctant national celebrity.
The nearly 6-foot-1 basketball player is a sensation on the court. The Hoop, a private Beaverton basketball facility that hosts leagues, told her last month that she could no longer play on a team with sixth-grade boys.
Nared, her parents and her coach think it's because the youngster is too good. Parents of boys on opposing teams, coach Michael Abraham says, complained after seeing their sons bested by a girl.
Her story has been discussed on ABC's "The View" and featured on TV and radio stations across the country.
This week, Nared and her mother flew to New York City to be interviewed on ABC's "Good Morning America."
Abraham says he anticipated the backlash would be big -- "but not this big."
