Jefferson tops Corvallis, wins 5A basketball title
11:30 PM PDT on Saturday, March 15, 2008
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Kalonji Paschal scored 14, Jordan Black added 12 and No. 2 Jefferson beat No. 3 Corvallis, 55-52 in the OSAA Class 5A boys basketball championship Saturday in McArthur Court.
Terrance Jones added 11 points for the Democrats (24-1), which lost the lead in the fourth quarter before holding on in the final minutes.
Nick Eason scored 15 to lead the Spartans (25-2), while Cade Hearing added 13 points and Alex Hendrickson scored 11.
The Democrats were playing in their first championship game since winning the 4A title in 2000. They have played in the state tournament six since then, including the last two at the 5A level.
Last season Jefferson was knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals by Corvallis.
The Spartans were down 46-41 when they started their rally with 5:50 to play. Hendrickson made a free throw, Nadav Heyman scored on a layup and then Camron Horrell knocked down a pair of game-tying free throws with 3:05 on the clock to make it 46-46.
Jones put the Democrats back on top with a short jumper and then followed a Corvallis turnover by going 1-for-2 from the line to give Jefferson a 49-46 lead with 2:04 to play.
Heyman scored inside again to cut the Spartans' deficit to one, but Paschal made a layup and foul shot at the other end for a 52-48 lead.
Eason made two free throws with 16.6 seconds left to get the Spartans to within one possession, 54-52, but Henry Williams made 1-of-2 from the line with 13.4 seconds remaining and Heyman's last-ditch 3-point attempt as time expired hit off the front of the rim.
The win gave Jefferson its fourth state title and second under coach Marshall Haskins.
The Spartans were playing in their eighth title game, but the first since 1986, when they also finished in second place. Tyrone White hit a 3-pointer 54 seconds into the game to put the Democrats up 3-0 and they never trailed.
Black and Kalonji Paschal each had nine points by halftime for Jefferson, which led 32-24 at the break. The Democrats had their lead cut to 23-21 following a jumper by the Spartans' Hearing at the 4:09 mark of the second quarter.
But Jefferson outscored Corvallis 7-3 to end the quarter up by eight. Paschal scored the final five points during that run.
Heyman, the two-time Mid-Willamette Conference player of the year for Corvallis, was held scoreless in the first half. The senior guard missed on his only three attempts.
Heyman finished the game with nine points on 3-of-8 shooting. His first points didn't come until late in the third quarter when he converted a pair of free throws with 1:47 left. His first field goal didn't come until there was just 6:21 left in the game.
Back-to-back baskets by Eason got the Spartans to within 36-30 midway through the third, but Terrance Ross answered for the Democrats with a pair of jumpers and Jefferson took a 43-26 advantage into the fourth quarter.
