Local runners Rupp, Hasay finish in Top 3 at Boston Marathon

Rupp finishes 2nd at Boston Marathon

BOSTON, Mass. -- Two local runners who starred at the University of Oregon finished in the Top 3 of the 121st running of the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Galen Rupp, who lives in Portland, finished second behind Kenya's Geoffrey Kirui. Rupp set a personal record with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 58 seconds. Kirui finished with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 36 seconds.

Two other former Oregon runners also finished in the Top 10, including Shadrack Biwott, who finished fourth (2:12.08), and Luke Puskedra (2:14.45), who finished ninth.

Among women, former Ducks runner and Beaverton resident Jordan Hasay finished third in her marathon debut with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 23 minutes, behind winner Edna Kiplagat, a Kenyan policewoman running her first Boston Marathon, and second-place finisher Rose Chelimo of Bahrain.

Kiplagat's unofficial time was 2 hours, 21 minutes, 53 seconds and Chelimo finished 59 seconds behind at 2 hours, 22 minutes, 51 seconds.

Hasay's time was the fastest American debut for a woman by 2 minutes, 53 seconds.
