Portland (0-1-2) has never beaten the Rapids in Colorado, going 0-3-1 in their road games with Colorado.

Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts earned a red card when he made contact with Brown while trying to contest him for the ball.

Ricketts left the game with a leg injury and was replaced by Andrew Weber. Sanchez faked Weber into the left post before punching the ball into the center of the net.

Weber hauled down Sanchez moments later. Brown's penalty kick was stopped by Weber, but Brown converted on the rebound.

The first half was played at a deliberate pace with players moving gingerly on the iced surface of Dick's Sporting Good Park.

Colorado had most of the minimal scoring chances, with Brown testing Ricketts twice in the first four minutes.

Brown sent a shoulder-high shot off a hard cut that Ricketts batted over his head before securing it with both hands. Moments later he hit Ricketts at the belt.

Ricketts came the closest to scoring for Portland in the 10th minute. The Timbers' goalkeeper sent a wind-aided goalie kick at his counterpart in the 20th minute. John Berner stumbled backyard toward the netting, but regained his footing in time to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.

The best save of the game was made by Colorado defender Marvell Wynne minutes after halftime. Steve Zakuani had Berner on the ground between himself and the left post, but Wynne stepped in front of Zakuani's shot to keep the game scoreless.
