PORTLAND, Ore. -- University of Portland distance runner Parkes Kendrick has had a busy college career.
The Grant High School graduate went to the school and played soccer. She was a stand-out on the team but said, “I just wasn’t happy playing soccer.” So she switched to cross country and track and field.
This fall she had to make a difficult decision. She was a finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship but the team was running in the NCAA Championship meet the same day as the final interview.
“Both were equally important to me,” Kendrick said. “But in terms of potential for future ramifications I went with the interview instead.”
She had the support of her coach and teammates in making the decision. She’s a math major who was one of the schools valedictorians this year.
Kendrick still has some running left. The NCAA regionals are at the end of May.
