PORTLAND -- Megan Rapinoe, a standout midfielder for the University of Portland, Seattle Sounders FC Women and Team USA, revealed via 'Out' magazine on Tuesday that she is gay.
While many friends already knew, Rapinoe she said no one had directly asked her before and it was her job to formally come out. "For the record, I am gay," she told the magazine.
“I feel like sports in general are still homophobic, in the sense that not a lot of people are out,” said Rapinoe. “I feel everyone is really craving [for] people to come out. People want -- they need -- to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good ol’ U.S. of A.”
Rapinoe, who has an endorsement contract with Nike, will play for the U.S. in the London Olympics.
