Bremerton swimmer Nathan Adrian has won an Olympic silver medal as part of the Men’s 4 x 100 meter Freestyle Relay team. France took the gold.
Adrian swam the first leg of the relay final, followed by Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Ryan Lochte.
Adrian gave the United States a 0.14 second lead on Australia after his leg. France was third.
Phelps extended the lead to 0.76 over France with Australia falling to third.
Jones gave some of that lead back in the third leg, putting the U.S. up by 0.55 seconds over France.
Lochte, the new go-to guy for the U.S., was handed the anchor leg. He still had a 0.30 second lead at the turn for the final 50 meters. But French anchor Agnel Yannick poured on some speed and cruised past Lochte to give France the win.
France clocked in at 3 minutes, 9.93 seconds, followed by the Americans at 3:10.38. Russia took bronze in 3:11.41.
Pre-race favorite Australia finished fourth.
Americans James Feigen, Matthew Grevers, Ricky Berens and Jazon Lezak will also get a medal by virtue of having swam the preliminary heat.
Adrian won a gold medal in this event in 2008, but he only swam the preliminary heat, not the final.
He will swim again Tuesday in the 100 meter Freestyle, where he is considered a medal contender.
More details to come.
