Soccer superstar Tina Ellertson shoots for Olympic team11:32 AM PDT on Friday, March 21, 2008It's time to profile our first Road To Beijing athlete, a Vancouver woman hoping to get a shot at Olympic gold in the sport she loves-- soccer. You could call 26-year-old Tina Ellertson the epitome of a soccer mom. Quality time with her family is as important as getting ready to shoot for a spot on the U.S. Women's Olympic Soccer Team. "To actually have that be an opportunity is an amazing thing. It chokes me up just because I want it so bad," said Tina. But there's something else you should know about Tina. "The soccer moms want to paint my belly because they think it looks like a perfect ball," laughed Tina. Yes, she's pregnant. Her baby girl is due mid-May. The Olympics are in August. "I know what it's like to come back from having a baby. Doing it this close, in time, that's going to be a challenge," said Ellertson. But through that unparalleled drive and dedication unique to Olympic athletes, she plans to whip her body back into shape in mere weeks and prove to her coaches that she's ready. Her husband Brad noted, "She really is awesome at everything. Anything she sets her mind to she accomplishes. She really has a drive like I've never seen of anyone." Her unusual story caught the eye of a little company, perhaps you've heard of them, Johnson & Johnson which created a series of web-based mini-documentaries on 8 Olympic hopefuls and their families. "It's unique because it brings in the dynamic of family, playing at such a high level you need your family. It's such a huge part of your success," said Tina. And while she won't know if she's pulled it off until later this summer, we know she's someone to definitely keep your eyes on. "I've got my family support and I'm going to do the best I can," said Tina. If you'd like to check out the web documentary Johnson & Johnson did on Tina or the seven other athletes including gymnast Paul Hamm and his brother Morgan, check out Stephanie Stricklen's Blog.
