PORTLAND -- She didn't return with any new Olympic medals, but that didn't stop family, friends and fans from cheering wildly as Mariel Zagunis arrived at Portland International Airport Monday.
The two-time Olympic gold medal winning fencer fell just short of the podium in London. But she has plenty of good memories, including being chosen to carry the American flag at the opening ceremony.
“To have that honor, to represent Team USA, is absolutely surreal and it's one of the biggest, most amazing experiences I've ever had,” she said. “It’s something I'm never going to forget and it really made the London games for me.”
Zagunis said her Olympic career is far from over; she's hoping to qualify for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
