Police: Ethiopian athletes in Oregon planned to seek asylum

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A police report shows that one of four Ethiopian athletes who went missing during an international track meet in Eugene told an officer they all planned to seek asylum in the United States.

According to the University of Oregon police report, 17-year-old Amanuel Abebe told an officer that he and three others on the Ethiopian track team planned to apply for asylum at a U.S. immigration office in Portland on July 28.

The Register-Guard says

the runners were reported missing from the World Junior Championships in Eugene in late July. They were found safe with acquaintances in Beaverton, Oregon, and Federal Way, Washington.

It's unknown whether the athletes have sought asylum.

A spokeswoman with the U.S. Citizen and Immigrations Services said the agency doesn't release that information.
