The Oregon Ducks are 2-3, 0-2 in conference play and preparing to welcome No. 5 Washington, a team that hasn’t defeated the Ducks in 12 years, into Autzen Stadium Saturday night.
Needless to say, this season’s feeling is foreign to many Oregon fans. Some have taken to social media to vent their frustration and call for head coach Mark Helfrich to be fired.
One frustrated fan, Ryan Sotelo of Santa Cruz, Calif., started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $11 million, enough to pay for Helfrich’s buyout.
“The Ducks have the best facilities, the best gear, the best of everything...Now they need the best coach. Mark Helfrich is not the guy for the job. It’s time to take action and make a statement for the Oregon AD,” Sotelo wrote.
Twelve people have made contributions to the campaign in its two-day existence, for a total of $235.
Sotelo said the contributions will go toward the buyout, but only in the event that Helfrich is fired and the athletic department accepts the money.
If the money is not accepted, it will be donated to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Sotelo said.
