PORTLAND, Ore. -- Former Portland Trail Blazers player and broadcaster Steve “Snapper” Jones has died, the team confirmed.
He was 75 years old.
Jones grew up in Portland and played basketball at Franklin High School. He then played at the University of Oregon in college and played eight professional seasons in the American Basketball Association. He was a three-time ABA All-Star. Jones finished his career in the NBA, playing with the Blazers in 1975-76.
When his playing career came to an end, Jones became a beloved NBA broadcaster with CBS and called the Blazers championship win over the Philadelpia 76ers in 1977. Jones would go on to call games for the Blazers and several national networks over his multi-decade career. He called his last game for the Blazers in 2006.
