ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions need options in a depleted backfield without Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure.

Keiland Williams gives them one.

Williams ran for 71 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in a preseason loss Friday night against Cleveland. He was used as a backup behind Kevin Smith, but the performance probably helped his chances to compete to be the team's starting running back in Week 1.

Best still doesn't know when he'll be cleared for contact after having two concussions last year. Leshoure is struggling to come back from a hamstring injury and he has been suspended for the first two games of the season for off-field conduct.
