EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon Ducks once again grace the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. This week, Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is featured on one of six regional covers around the nation.
While the prospect of the SI jinx resonates through the legions of die-hard Duck fans, it only takes a brief reflection to a cover last year, featuring De’Anthony Thomas, to prove the superstition bunk.
In case anyone forgot, the Ducks beat an impressive Kansas State in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl.
Aside from last year’s cover, the Ducks were featured twice in 2010 and on another regional cover in 2009, featuring quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and center Jordan Holmes.
Mariota spoke with GoDucks.com Wednesday after learning of the cover via text message.
"It's pretty exciting," Mariota told the site’s editor Rob Moseley. "That's something, when you're a little kid, you say, 'That would be cool, to be on the cover.'"
Sports Illustrated ranked the Ducks #5 leading up to kickoff against Nicholls State at Autzen Stadium Aug. 31. Alabama, Stanford, Texas A&M, and Ohio State fill out the one-through-four spots respectively.
