EUGENE, Ore --- Former standout Oregon Ducks football player Colt Lyerla has been accused of a drug offense and taken to the Lane County Jail.
Lyerla was arrested Wednesday after a Lane County drug investigation unit says they observed him near West 7th Avenue and Polk Street, snorting what appeared to be a white powdery substance in a parked vehicle.
The sheriff's office said in a prepared statement that Lyerla admitted to using and possessing cocaine.
Once spotted, detectives and Lyerla agreed to meet at his apartment to continue the investigation. When he arrived, Lyerla ran from his vehicle into a nearby apartment, the sheriff's office said. He emerged a short time later and was taken into custody.
He was accused of unlawful possession of cocaine and interfering with a police officer.
Lyerla left the team for personal reasons at the beginning of October, saying he was preparing for the NFL draft.
He was previously suspended for one game for violating team rules.
He also angered the UO athletic department last summer with tweets suggesting the Sandy Hook school shooting was a government conspiracy. Schools officials called it "insensitive and offensive."
