Break comes amidst four-game slide for Blazers

08:24 AM PST on Friday, February 15, 2008

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The All-Star break couldn't come at a better time for the Portland Trail Blazers, who veered off course during an ugly four-game road trip.

The listless Blazers (28-24) were whipped by Dallas 96-76 Wednesday night, putting an exclamation point on a trip where they lost all four games.

The first part of the season was characterized by a 13-game game winning streak, but the Blazers played 11 of those games at the Rose Garden.

The road, where Portland is 8-17 this season, hasn't been all that friendly. And since Portland's winning streak ended Dec. 31 in Utah, 14 of the Blazers' 22 games have been on the road.

Other forces, including an injury to forward James Jones, the loss of All-Star Brandon Roy for two games, and a schedule that included three potential playoff teams, have helped make for a bad trip.

"We looked mentally fatigued," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. "We (couldn't) sustain our concentration and our effort."

Roy led the Blazers against Dallas with 25 points and six assists, in his second game back after missing games against Detroit and Indiana because of a death in his family. But Portland had trouble sharing the ball, with just 10 assists, made only 11 of 22 free throws, and gave up 37 points to Dirk Nowitzki.

"I think they need to rest," McMillan said. "They need to get away from basketball and rest."

Portland's path does get easier when the team reconvenes for a home game against Sacramento on Tuesday -- only one long road trip (five games) remains, and Portland plays half of its remaining games at the Rose Garden, where it is 20-7 this season.

FERNANDEZ SHINES: Rudy Fernandez is leaving his mark in Spain, and perhaps increasing the chances he'll be in a Trail Blazer uniform next year.

Fernandez, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, scored 32 points to help DKV Jovennut capture the Copa del Rey in a win over tournament host Tau Ceramica. That followed a 20-point, five-assist performance in the quarterfinals against Pamesa Valencia.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, a close friend of Portland point guard Sergio Rodriguez, was named the MVP of the tournament for the second time. He also won the award in 2004.

The Blazers purchased the draft rights to Fernandez from the Phoenix Suns, who picked him in the first round last year.

JONES OUT LONGER: James Jones is going to be out longer than the Blazers originally though. The team will rest the sharpshooting forward for 3-5 weeks after the reoccurrence of a sore knee.

Portland had originally hoped to have Jones, a 48.3 percent 3-point shooter, back after the All-Star break, but announced earlier in the week that Jones would need a longer rest.

Prior to being sidelined Feb. 4, Jones was averaging 9.1 points and 2.9 rebounds as a key reserve for the Blazers.
