Lineup change for the Blazers; McRoberts returns
10:43 AM PST on Thursday, February 7, 2008
Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan is shaking up his starting lineup as the team heads into the All-Star break.
McMillan debuted his new lineup in Wednesday's 100-97 win over the Chicago Bulls, moving guard Jarrett Jack into the starting five, and sliding forward Martell Webster into the "white unit," which is what the coach calls his second string.
The move was prompted by the loss of sharp-shooting forward James Jones for at least two weeks due to a knee injury.
Jones, the second-leading 3-point shooter in the NBA at 48.3 percent, has suffered a recurrence of the tendinitis that kept him out of 12 of the first 15 games of the season and probably won't return until Feb. 19 against Sacramento.
The injury might have resulted in Jones not being invited to participate in the 3-point contest All-Star weekend.
McMillan felt that Webster, a 38.5 percent 3-point shooter could give the second team the outside presence it would be missing in Jones.
Jack played well in the starting role, posting his second consecutive 17 point game as the Blazers held on to win after leading by 13 points at one point.
"You can sense that guys are getting ready for the All-Star break and some rest, but we've got to fight through," said Brandon Roy, who led the Blazers with 28 points and will play in his first All-Star Game Feb. 17.
Before the break, Portland (28-20) has to endure a tough four-game road swing that takes it to Detroit, Indiana, Houston and Dallas.
The Pistons have a comfortable lead in the Central Division, the Mavericks have been fighting with New Orleans for the lead in the Southwest, Houston has won eight of nine, and Portland has struggling Indiana on the second night of a back to back.

ALDRIDGE BOUNCES BACK: Blazer forward LaMarcus Aldridge bounced back from a bad game with 18 points against the Chicago Bulls Wednesday.
Aldridge made 8 of 15 shots and was Portland's second-leading scorer in the game.
The 6-foot-11 Aldridge, averaging 16.9 points a game, scored just four points on 2-of-9 shooting in a loss to Denver on Monday.
Aldridge's share of the scoring load has fallen with the emergence of Brandon Roy as the focal point of the Blazers offense, cutting five points off his average since the beginning of December.
Aldridge, the No. 2 pick in the 2006 draft, will play in the rookie-sophomore game with Roy during All-Star weekend.

McROBERTS RETURNS: Rookie forward Josh McRoberts rejoined the Blazers this week after a stint with the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League.
Roberts, a second-round pick from Duke, averaged 7.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists in eight games with the Stampede.
"It was a really good experience," McRoberts said. "It was the first time that I'd played in a game with extended minutes in a long time, so it was good to get out there and get some game action."
