Blazers' Roy to play on All-Star team
07:10 PM PST on Thursday, January 31, 2008
Portland Trail Blazer Brandon Roy was recruited for the 2008 NBA All-Star team Thursday.
Roy, last season's NBA Rookie of the Year, was a reserve selection for the team by the Western Conference coaches. The All-Star starters were selected by fans.
Roy is the first Trail Blazer selected to the game since Rasheed Wallace in 2000 and 2001.
“It’s a dream come true,” Roy said. “I’m sure our success this season helped influence coaches to vote for me, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to celebrate this honor with my teammates, and to represent Portland.”
Roy averages 19.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists for the Trail Blazers, who are 26-19 and have surpassed expectations after the loss of No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden to injury in the offseason.
The announcement was carried live before fans and team officials at the Rose Garden Thursday.
Portland has surpassed expectations by going 25-18, punctuated by a 13-game winning streak, the longest in the NBA this season.
Since December 3rd, coach Nate McMillan decided to let Brandon Roy start with the ball on offensive possessions, essentially making him the team's point guard.
With only 12 players invited from each conference, Roy would be competing with Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Tracy McGrady, Baron Davis, Chris Paul, Manu Ginobili and others for two or three guard positions.
Each of the 15 Western Conference coaches filled out a ballot in the past week, selecting seven reserves, 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center and 2 ‘wild cards’ at any position. Coaches could not vote for players from their own team.
The NBA says Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson will start in the backcourt for the West team.
