Blazers trade rumors abound; opponents adjusting

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The trade rumors are heating up across the league, especially now that New Jersey's Jason Kidd is apparently on the block.

The Portland Trail Blazers are right in the thick of trade talk, with names like Travis Outlaw, Jarrett Jack, Steve Blake and Channing Frye being bandied about.

Only general manager Kevin Pritchard knows if the Blazers will make a deal before the Feb. 21 deadline, and he won't tip his hand.

There are many who believe the Blazers should stand pat, given the team's surprising successes and an obvious chemistry among the players.

Coach Nate McMillan understands why some of his young charges are grabbing attention.

"We've got what a lot of people want and that is youth and some potential. And the fact that we're playing well, that's going to attract some people and, you know, I expect the phone to start ringing," he said.

ADJUSTMENTS IN ORDER: For almost two months the Trail Blazers were unbeatable at home, winning 12 straight. But losses in two out of their last three games at Rose Garden, the latest 84-83 to Cleveland Wednesday, has the team doing some soul searching.

Channing Frye thinks he has a diagnosis.

"I think teams are playing us different -- we're considered a good win now," he said.

Frye said the Blazers might have lost some ground on a recent road trip that saw them play seven games in 12 days, leaving little time to practice and make adjustments.

"Teams are giving us different looks now -- trapping (Brandon) Roy, stuff like that."

LeBron James scored 17 or his 37 points in the fourth quarter against the Blazers Wednesday as Portland seemed to struggle with focus down the stretch.

On the final play, James caught Portland flat-footed as he drove past Roy and to the basket for the winning layup.

"We should be able to contain that," coach Nate McMillan said. "We have to step over and give (Roy) help."

SUPER SOPHS: Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge will represent the Blazers in the Rookie Challenge & Youth Game All-Star weekend in New Orleans.

The game, which matches nine NBA rookies against nine second-year players, is Feb. 15.

Roy, who won the Rookie of the Year award last year, is Portland's leader in points (19.3) and assists (5.6). Aldridge is averaging 17.2 points and is Portland's leader in rebounds at 7.4 per game.
